(Prices are negotiable) Chateau du Mung was originally built in 1301. The ground floor and the north tower was built in the 14th c. and is still standing and in excellent condition. There were other floors added in the following centuries through the 18th c. The size of the property is 8 hectares or appx. 20 acres.
The chateau has been restored with new plumbing and electricity. The main living area, including the kitchen, dining room and private apartment have central hot water/radiator heating. There is also plentiful hot water for 15 bathrooms.
Appropriate to the period restoration. There is a replaced slate roof from 2003 after the storm of the century. The 19 outbuildings had tile roofs replaced October-November, 2009. The chateau is partially furnished. Most of the 14 bedrooms have all the beds and bedding shipped from America.
Kitchen has large commercial stainless stove and other furnishings. Grand Salon is partially furnished, sofas, tables, etc. Dining room has large table, buffet, chairs & beautiful built in china and silver cabinets from the 18th c. Some furnishings are needed but quite a lot come with the chateau. A more detailed list can be furnished if necessary.
It is in a great location in the Charente Maritime, South of the Loire & North of Bordeaux. It is 2 3/4 hours by the TGV South West of Paris, or by car 4 hours on the A10.
There is much to see in the Charente Maritime including Roman ruins and the Atlantic Ocean is only about 12 miles away with beautiful beaches in Royan and Chatillon Plage. La Rochelle is only 30 miles with it's history and beautiful harbor. The fresh produce from the area and the wine is unsurpassed.
The outbuildings include a stable, chapel, 2 very large garages, pigeonaire, 3 apartments and various other buildings of the 19 in all. The wine cellar is in the chateau under the elaborate Renaissance stairwell. Some of the outbuildings still need work including 2 of the gites
The park has many trees including Sequoias from America, many beautiful chestnut trees and other 200 to 300 year old specimen trees. Wonderful sites for pool and tennis courts are located on the property or in the park, as the French call it. All pertinent chateau and site plans and a history of previous owners are available. The chateau is included in a large book of Chateaux on the Charente.
The chateau needs to be seen to really appreciate it, the buildings, grounds, fabulous old tile floors, the actual size, Charente river view (winter),etc.
