It takes about 1 1/2 hour to Sao Jose dos Campos and then 1 1/2 hours to Ubatuba going thru Taubate. You can go thru Caraguatatuba, it is more scenic but will add another hour to the trip but you should do it at least once. It has a pretty good nite life and has an island Ilha-Bela which has a lot of tourist stuff like wind surfing, boat and jet ski rentals, etc. etc. but you dont want to live near there. My friend has a house near there and because Carguatatuba is a bigger city than Ubatuba it has big city problems. He wants to move away closer to praia grande. From Rio de Janiero it takes about 3 1/2 hours from the Rio de Janeiro airport. Again, it is far enough away from big city crime problems, but close enough to visit.
