Cottage »Above The Sea« For Rent in Santa Maria Island, Azores, Portugal Peace And Quiet, Wide Horizons, Genuine Relaxation Rent It For: 550 € per month Santa Maria, the southernmost island of the Azores group, is not only the sunniest and warmest, but also the one with the best sandy beaches, lush subtropical vegetation and friendly, amiable inhabitants. The island is an unspoilt, unique natural paradise untouched by environmental calamity, criminality, or mass tourism.
Directly over the most beautiful beach, São Lourenço, stands the house named ABOVE THE SEA, situated entirely on its own. The site is the most spectacular on the island, with overwhelming vistas out over the Atlantic Ocean and a rocky islet close by. The roar of the sea is to be heard, and sometimes one can watch whales and dolphins.
ABOVE THE SEA is an old country cottage that we restored lovingly in the way the Azorean ancestor had designed it. It consists of a kitchen-cum-living room, a small lounge with fireplace, bedroom, and bathroom. Furnishings are functional and exceptionally comfortable. There is heating in every room.
The house has two spacious terraces, surrounded by flowering trees, one shaded by a palm tree. The associated grounds are very large (more than 16,000 sqm / four acres). A drivable way leads down to the cottage, ending there. The house and all of its surroundings, not observable due to the secluded position, radiate an atmosphere of special calmness and peacefulness hardly no longer to be found anywhere.
ABOVE THE SEA is the ideal place - for example - for artists and other creative people searching just those qualities for their work, or for persons recovering from stress or severe disease.
Distances: It is 2 km (1.2 miles) from the nearest village, Santa Bárbara, which has a shop selling groceries and a pub, it is also 2 km away from the sandy beaches of São Lourenço (there is also a nearby footpath leading down). It is 11 km (6.8 miles) to the largest town in the island, Vila do Porto, which has supermarkets, restaurants and shops of all descriptions. It is 13 km (8 miles) to the airport.
The rent: The mentioned price of 550 Euro per month is quoted for a term of at least one year.
Getting there: To Santa Maria (airport code: SMA) there are one to three flights a day from the main island Sao Miguel (PDL). This you can reach with direct flights from several European cities, or via Lisbon (LIS) or Porto (OPO), to where very reasonable offers exist, especially from the low cost airlines. On Thursdays there is also a direct flight from Lisbon to Santa Maria. As the conditions are changing constantly, we would be only too delighted to help you plan your travel arrangements.
