Most construction methods in mountainous areas in Costa Rica is done by leveling with a bull dozer, followed by a concrete slab, with the assumption the ground is stable under all conditions. Unfortunately many people agree to building their dream vacation home in mountainous areas without the understanding the impact of heavy rains, earth quakes, security, and other elements of the jungle. Not only are large sums of money paid in the initial construction costs, but in hidden costs such as road maintenance, up keep in preventing “jungle taking over”, and security when unattended for extended periods of time.
While having your own home may provide more privacy in paradise, in general, the costs and headaches are high. The concept of these cabins offers the ideal low cost alternative for people who wish to spend part of the year in Costa Rica (AKA “Snow Birds”). The basic concept is simple, the cabins are individually owned through a corporation and which offers a simple way to transfer ownership through shares without an attorney. An infrastructure is built-in for rental, where are all of the maintenance and security costs are built in.
The Serendipity Cabins are built with the best materials available in Costa Rica: helical peers bored into stable soil, reinforced concrete, bug proof wood, tile, and steel. No trees have been removed nor have any bulldozers been used to level or alter the terrain. The concept of the helical peer is key to the construction where an “anchor point” can be established in one isolated location (e.g., on the side of a hill, next to trees, virtually any terrain). Once the anchor point is established, the units are literally built by hand from the ground up using reinforced concrete. The cabins can be thought of as concrete tree houses that are elevated from the jungle floor 15 to 30 feet (see cabin photo). All of the units are connected by an elevated sidewalk (see walkway photo).
The interiors consist of innovative construction methods such as low maintenance colored grout for the wall coverings as compared to traditional dry wall and paint. The grout is pre-tinted and applied directly to the cement wall, to provide an earthy appearance. The bathroom sink is one example of the artistry (see bathroom photo) where the water runs down the leaf into the sink. Each unit is equipped with a kitchenette that includes, a refrigerator, hot plate, oven, and coffee maker (see kitchen photo).
