THE COUNTRY OF TONGA

Tonga just happens to be the last constitutional monarchy in the South Pacific. The pristine, Kingdom of Tonga is a country filled with beautiful and friendly people, hands off and generally likeable government officers and public servants, and a aura of absolute peace. It is a country that is traveling two roads, which would seem to be going in opposite directions to an outsider, but to a Tongan, this makes perfect sense. Tonga is on the road to economic improvement and touristic advancement, while at the same time traveling the much older path of obedience to culture and respect for nature and family alike.

THE TONGAN PEOPLE

The beautiful, brown skinned, brown eyed, black haired people of Tonga are extremely friendly and helpful, which is no doubt part of the reason the country has never rescinded its title of, “The Friendly Islands”, as named by Captain Cook after he received a warm reception upon landing in Vava’u. Tongans are a deeply Christian people, largely following the Protestant Free Wesleyan Church, which is the largest in Tonga, and includes the current King as one of its many members.

Tongans are a very family oriented and care free people and do not concern themselves with the same things as Americans and Europeans do, such as being on time, increasing their nest egg, planning their retirement and traveling around the world. Tongans are content with the simpler things in life, such as family, friends, beaches and coconuts!

Many Tongans live in traditional rural dwellings, made of woven coconut leaves; however western style houses are becoming more and more popular and are viewed as the norm in the larger cities. Elderly Tongans are known to wear very traditional clothing as well, however younger Tongans are quite comfortable with western clothing, and there is no stigma attached to foreigners who dress in this manner. Men as a rule have to wear shirts in public, and women are expected to be fully clothed, even when swimming, although many tourists disregard these rules without any trouble. Tongans living in cities and towns depend on imported food and grocery stores much like Westerners do, while their rural counterparts rely on fruits and vegetables from their gardens and fish from the ocean, in a very self-sufficient manner.

Typical Tongan families are quite large, with parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and others all part of the group, many times living together. It is not at all rare for a family to have eight or more children. Tonga is also generally thought to be a patriarchal society with men taking the leadership role in the fami8ly and women providing a support role, however many Westerner’s actually view it as more of a matriarchal society with the women often times in charge of the finances, business dealings and shopping and the men relegated to manual labor and farming. However, any way you look at it, Tonga has a wonderful and vibrant family structure that is a pleasure to be around.

THE VAVA'U ISLAND GROUP

The Vava’u Island group is comprised of around 119 sq km, 50 plus islands (most of which are uninhabited) and nearly 18,000 residents. The vava’u group is Tonga’s most popular tourist destination and is renowned for its whale-watching, yachting, diving, and big game fishing. Vava’u truly is the jewel of the South Pacific, and the place this author comfortably calls “home”!

The main island of the Vava’u Island group is called Vava'u Lahi and covers 90 sq km of land and has nearly 14,000 inhabitants, or roughly 80% of the entire population for the Vava’u group. In the main city of Neiafu, all services can be found and this is the only place where there is any bit of hustle and bustle as Vava’u truly is a relaxed, sleepy kind of place, where the local saying, “no worries” applies to all areas of life. Vava’u island also has many wonderful swimming and snorkeling beaches, along with historical sites and villages such as Makave, where legend has it that an ancient race of dark skinned giants once lived, along with mysterious Lake Ano, the Port of Refuge and superb surfing spots as well. Every Saturday there is also a fair (free market) where it seems like everyone in the island group pours into town to sell there wares and haggle over prices on everything from local handicrafts to imported goods such as DVD players and the like.

WHO'S SETTLING IN TONGA?

While Tonga is still for the most part an undiscovered paradise, wise investors, fed-up (with their respective homelands) foreigners and outside the box thinkers have begun to relocate here within the past 5 years or so. There is now a functioning tourism board, headed up by many North American and European ex-pats, as well as many other North American, European, Australian and New Zealander families located throughout the islands. Most of these ex-pats share a common belief in peace and privacy as well as a dislike for Western politics, and many a lively discussion can be had among these fellow free thinkers.

In 1988, there was an influx of ethnic Chinese traders settling in Tonga to open businesses and many of the most popular business establishments in the country are owned by these Chinese families, all of which are extremely friendly and most of which speak excellent English as well as Tongan. Many businesses such as restaurants, internet cafes, dive shops, island resorts and the like have also recently been started by various Westerners, though the main groups of people that seem to be relocating to this pristine and peaceful paradise are middle aged and retiree Americans, Europeans, Australians and Kiwis who just want a simpler, more serene life in the friendly islands, far away from the hustle and bustle of the Western world.

Will you make the leap and come and join them in South Pacific Island paradise?
