The history of Tournou le Haut is also the history of the south of France. Earliest known records list a "fort" or "stronghold" belonging to the Duke of Mirepoix in the early 11th Century. Beginning in 1209 and lasting more than 100 years the Languedoc region witnessed the Catholic Crusades against the Cathar religion. It was here that the dreaded Inquisition began. It is estimated that over 1 million people died in the Languedoc during the Crusades, many burned at the stake. The rugged foothills and mountains of the Pyrennes provided shelter and strongholds for the fleeing Cathar faithful. It is believed that Tournou le Haut was one of those strongholds.
