Plzen, the fourth most populous city in the Czech Republic, is only 55 miles west of Prague, and known globally for Pilsener beer. In September of 2010 it was announced that Plzen will join Mons, Belgium as the European capitals of culture in 2015, bringing an enormous amount of tourism to the town. There are several tourist attractions in Plzen at the present time. St. Bartholomew's cathedral built in the late 13th century, has the highest tower (Ft 335) in the Czech Republic. The Renaissance period town hall is also located in the main square. The Moorish Revival Great Synagogue ranks the second largest in all of Europe. There is an underground tunnel/cellar network, among the longest in central Europe, of which three quarters of a kilometer is open to the public. There are several historical museums, a wonderful zoo(train to it in the square). Many historic castles, manors, and old lodges are located within driving distance. Most popular of all is the Pilsner Brewery, started in 1842, with tours available of the old section of tunnels, cellars, brew stations and the new bottling plant. Among the already vast reasons to visit, the cultural year will have several additional exhibitions, added attractions and festivals, a fantastic opportunity to introduce people to the area and then revisit. As a point of reference, Plzen is twin cities with Regensberg, Germany; Winterhur, Switzerland; Limoges, France and Liege Belgium to name a few.
Located in the historic center of Plzen, a stone's throw to the old town square and city museum, the Hotel Continental is within walking distance to all of the above sites, and has a history as rich as its setting, built in 1895 by the famous Pilsner breweries. Purchased and renamed The Hotel Continental in 1929, the hotel has been undergoing restoration since 1991. Complete with a popular flourishing restaurant, a cocktail lounge and a night club, the hotel portion could reopen immediately. Through the direction of the maintenance manager, the house keeping staff has kept the hotel in an operational manner. An extreme rarity is the twenty space parking area adjacent to the Hotel for the guests.
The majority of the rooms have been completely modernized, but still maintain their old world charm and elegance. This exclusive boutique hotel has 46 rooms, which include 16 singles, 26 doubles, three double suites and one triple suite with kitchenette. Each room is uniquely furnished with exquisite antiques. Almost all rooms are equipped with a full bath, telephone, and Wi-fi. ??The main floor lobby contains the reception area, cocktail lounge, large restaurant, huge kitchen, small shop, restrooms, and an amazing crystal chandelier. There is also a club downstairs with a dance floor, dining room, and bar decorated with a Jazz theme. In addition, a large conference salon is located on the first floor. The extra square footage on the fourth floor could be creatively renovated to provide more rooms, a sauna, jacuzzi and exercise room, while still leaving ample space for an additional spacious suite.
