Here is some info on the area: Ojochal is 15 minutes to the south of Uvita or
35 minutes to the south of Dominical. Palmar Norte is 25 to the south of Ojochal.
The nearest beach is Playa Tortuga, a beautiful expansive beach with the Terraba river mouth on the south end. I also really like Ventanas (which is 5 minutes further by car) because of the caves (or Ventanas/windows) through a cliff beside the beach leading to the ocean on the other side. As you continue north there are a number of smaller beaches including Pinula. 15
minutes the north of Ojochal is Ballena National Park that is
a great beach and marine reserve with volcanic islands off the coast.
It is called Ballena (or whale) because humpbacked whales come tho
calf here every year and has calm waters around the peninsula great for snorkeling. North of there, Playa Hermosa and Dominical are know for their surfing. Just a couple minutes to the South of Ojochal is the Terraba River with its barrier islands and expansive mangrove forest leading to the ocean.
The South is much more ethnically diverse than the tourist towns of
the Northern and Central coastline, which are primarily American
tourist towns. Ojochal is located 20 minute south of Uvita and 20
minutes north of Palmar Norte. It is commonly referred to as Tortuga
and Tortuga Arriba on maps Ojochal's first foreign settlers were the
French Canadians, but now has a nice melding of Costa Ricans, French, Canadians, German, British, Americans, and a few other European nationalities.
It has a nice community feel where people stop to chat at the grocery store.
The windy village road is dotted with French, German, Gourmet Pizza, wine bar,
Canadian, and Tico restaurants, that are a destination for people from
some of the bigger tourist towns. With all of these things within
the village or in close proximity Ojochal remains a sleeper village.
While there are tourist that come to stay at the local B&Bs the main
population is its permanent residents or people that come every year
for a hand full of months, giving it a nice community feel. Local
bands play every so often at one of the local bars, karaoke is ever
popular, one of the Canadian restaurants has Foosball tournaments,
there is a yearly fiesta with a rodeo, farmers market, turtle watching group, and other
organized activities.
Other near by activities organized by tour groups or done on your own include:
hiking, waterfalls, kayaking, beaches, surfing, snorkeling, deep sea
fishing, eco tours, botanical gardens, boat river and mangrove tours.
The proximity of the the mountains to the ocean is this region house a
good number of micro climates that house amazing biodiversity and
great accessibility to endless outdoor activities. Costa Rica has a
great national parks system. The Osa Peninsula is just to the
south and is known for having the most biodiversity in this
hemisphere. The coast to the front of the village and north is full of small beaches that I
have commonly found myself solo on during a weekday. On the weekends
it is common to find families camping out on the beach and other
weekend visitors. Each beach has intensity depending on the shape and direction it faces.
I hope this answered some of your questions about the village, let me
know if there is anything else I could be more clear.
