The house is situated in Civil Lines, a posh spacious residential colony in the heart of Dharamshala town at the foothills of the Dhauladhar subrange of the Himalayas. Dharamshala town has also been home to His Holiness, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet, and his Government in Exile since 1959.

The house has a full terrace that provides the best view in town of the magnificient Dhauladhar mountains in the North, the Cheel (Pine) jungle in the West, the entire Dharamsala town in the East and the beautiful Kangra valley in the South - a real treat for the eyes any time of the day or night. A monument dedicated to 1971 war heroes is within a hundred yards as are a couple of parks for children. For avid nature lovers, a privately-owned tea estate with a drivable public road is within two to three kilometers of the colony.

The owner of the property retired as a senior Civil Servant and he and his wife personally supervise the upkeep and maintenance of the property.

The lower portion of the house was built in 1979-80. The upper storey was added in 1986-87. The entire house was remodelled and furnished in 1995-96 and again in 2003-04.
