Adra is located in the western area of the province of Almeria, known as “El Poniente”, 50 km away from the provincial capital, and it is the fourth most important town in the province with over 24,500 inhabitants.

Its economy has been traditionally linked to the fish and sea industries. When it was founded by the Phoenicians in the VIII century B.C., Abdera was a successful commercial centre. Later, the Romans traded the garum, a valued delicacy in Roman cuisine, from the coast of Adra to the main ports in the Mediterranean area.


The fishing harbor, built in 1911, is still one of the most important in the Andalusian coast, but the economic base of the town is nowadays intensive agriculture (in plastic greenhouses), which evokes the also important tradition in Adra (from the 16th century) of growing sugar cane.

It is also outstanding the economical activity of the service sector, especially building.

From the tourist point of view, Adra has got 13 km of coast and it proudly shows the Blue Flag (granted in recognition to its water quality) in three beaches: Censo, San Nicolas and Poniente, which are the closest to the city centre.





Adra’s tourist development is tightly joined to the development of the theme and “quality” tourism attracted by the revalorization of the Historical and Natural Heritage.


The recent building of the “Autovía del Mediterráneo”(Mediterranean Motorway) allows fast communication with the whole of the Mediterranean coast, making the economical and touristic development of this area much easier.
