Idyllic Cottage in Dominica with Spectacular Sea Views

Petit Ilot is a one bedroomed cottage with fantastic views overlooking the beautiful bay of San Sauveur on the east coast of Dominica. The house, although compact, is light and airy and has been built to an excellent standard by a local builder. It sits on the edge of a large, beautiful hibiscus and hummingbird filled garden, bordered by ancient mango trees, which slopes down through wood to the old disused St Sauveur road that encircles most of the land. Below, down to the bay, is steeply sloping forested land. No one can take away your view. Although part of the land adjoins the main road, the property is secluded and cannot be seen by passing traffic.

From either the verandah or the separate terrace, you can watch the little fishing boats leaving the port and then, when they return, go and mix with the friendly locals and buy freshly caught sailfish, tuna, dorado, lobster etc. Locals will also sell you fresh produce on their way home from their farming lots. Roseau, the capital is a comfortable 45 minutes drive away, the airport the same. Castle Bruce is only about 5 minutes away and has small supermarkets, a medical center and a local bank.

In just five minutes you can reach the wide sandy beach of St David's bay where you can swim, beachcomb or bathe in the deep river pools where the river meets the sea. And there is surf in Dominica. Depending upon the wind, you can surf (especially longboard - we're leaving two), completely alone, in pretty decent surf for most of the year in either the northern (Castle Bruce) or the southern end (Tranto) of the bay. There are also wonderful bathing pools closer to the house. Just hike up the small farm roads which lead up into the montains and explore. For the more adventurous, two stages of the cross-island Waitakubuli trail begin/end in nearby Castle Bruce.

The climate is very comfortable; atlantic breezes take the edge off the heat and humidity, and nights are usually pleasant - we sleep to the sound of the waves below, not mosquitoes. Of course, this is Dominica, and it can rain! But that's why it is green. And even in the rainy season, wthe sun shines.

The lot is about 2500 sq metres and although the house is comfortable for a couple to live (internal space about 50 square metres - we actually live here with our 8 year old daughter but spend most of our waking time on the verandah, the terrace or in the garden), there is about 1000 square metres of flat land (the garden area) which could be used to extend the original or construct another house, with little detriment to the garden. We can recommend a very good and reasonable local builder for any project that you might wish to take on.
