Home for Sale in Koro Island, Fiji
Family Home on Tropical Pacific Island
It's an amazing view to wake up to!
This pole house is built on two levels - the main bure, with its 'cathedral' thatched roof includes a beautifully constructed mahogany kitchen, one bedroom, sitting room, bathroom and separate toilet. Much of your time, though, will be spent on the large, covered deck, soaking up that view!
The two main sleeping bures are separate from each other, and linked to the main bure by walkways. The lower sleeping bure has its own en-suite and large deck. These spacious buildings are thatched, making them cool and airy, and also overlook the Bay.
If your dream is to build a house on a tropical island, we have done the hard work for you! You can move into Bure Totoka today.
The parcel of freehold land on which Bure Totoka sits is approximately one acre. In front and to the sides of the house are cultivated gardens with vegetable plots and many different fruit trees. We eat our own paw-paw, bananas, passion-fruit, oranges, lemons, pineapples, guavas ... but have yet to taste that first mangosteen!
Koro Island is renowned for its fertile soil, and this is reflected in the shrubs and vegetables the garden produces. Even the fence posts grow into trees! Garden visitors include native parrots and lorries, goshawk, fruit doves and wild chickens - and no poisonous snakes!
Bure Totoka is on the main Government Road around Koro Island. A concrete driveway lends easy access from there to the house. There is parking for two vehicles, and a container makes a secure, super-sized 'garden shed'.
Behind the house is our very own rain-forest, with some wonderful mature hardwood trees. It links to the forest around it, and encourages exploration and exercise in the cool shade of these forest giants. Up a pathway through the trees, we have positioned four rainwater tanks under their own catchment roof. All the water for the house is gravity-fed, so we have no need to run pumps.
We have eight solar panels, which are more than adequate for our electrical needs. We can run the back-up generator if we need extra power for heavier usage occasions. Cooking, refrigeration and hot water are powered by propane.
Bure Totoka is one of around 40 properties currently constructed on this old copra [coconut] plantation. This area has been steadily developed over the past 12 years by Koro Seaview Estates, who run two small resorts on the waterfront. We use these lovely facilities for swimming, meeting friends and accessing our boat.
Our neighbours have all built their own dream houses, and hail from Australia and New Zealand, Canada, the States and Hawaii, as well as Europe. Some are in Fiji full time, and some come and go throughout the year. However much time you want to spend on Koro in any year will be reflected in your neighbours' lives too. We get together to celebrate each others' special occasions, for music and games, for diving and snorkeling. Ages range between 1 and 70+! The Koro Island Community can be found on Facebook.
Koro Island has 13 villages and other settlements. The friendliness of Fijians is legendary and your sensitivity and generosity will be rewarded a thousand fold. Garden or household help is just a village away, and the relationships you build with the locals will be some of your favourite stories [and theirs!].
Communication between Koro and the two main Fiji islands is via drive-on ferry, private or Resort boats, or plane. Bure Totoka has good cellphone coverage, as well as a telephone landline and internet.
When talking about our life here on Koro, the question we are most frequently asked is "Well, what do you do all day?"
Some days you will feel ambitious and you'll get creative around the place - a little carpentry project, a garden plot to fill, garden pathways to improve, or a little painting or re-staining. Some days these jobs will get put aside because your neighbours will call around for a chat, or the sea will become a magnet for your scuba tank! World-class diving and fishing are on your doorstep.
The Post Office is an hour away, on the other side of the island - so, you may as well make a day of it. Pack up a picnic and throw the snorkeling gear in the back of the truck. You'll undoubtedly pick up someone along the way, or stop at one of the village shops and re-stock your cupboards. You won't pass any road signs, go through a traffic light, or see an advertising sign anywhere!
Koro Island appeals on many levels. For some its getting away from commerialism or the rat-race; for others, its giving your family the experience of a more natural and authentic environment; for us, it was the lure of the ocean and the chance to be warm all year.
Whatever your own reasons, call us, and let us explore whether Bure Totoka is part of your dream!
