House at the Costa de Lagoa (near Posto 11 of the ferry ) on the
island of Floripa , Florianopolis, SC, Brazil. Since completion in 2007
voted by everyone as one of the most beautiful houses on the
Costa de Lagoa. It is not only the house, which is almost
completely hidden by large bamboo trees when arriving by boat
from the town of Lagoa , but also the exclusive location where from
the totally renovated pontoon with enough space for a number of
boats, one climbs up to a house situated safely on the rocks built in
a mixture of oriental styles with clear Azorean influences and
surrounded by large decks and terraces. An ideal place far away
from the turmoil of cars, traffic jams and the sounds of the city etc.
and still within a 5-10 minutes reach by boat of all the necessities
and pleasures offered by not only the small town of Lagoa with the restaurants, shops for practical items and
for luxury and clothing, supermarkets , etc. but also near the authentic communities of the people living on
the Costa de Lagoa with the lovely fish restaurants which all through the year are the favourite destination of
the people from Florianopolis and tourists during weekends and holidays.
Architecture + description of the house: The house was designed
by a combination of a famous Dutch architect together with an
equally well known Brazilian architect to take care of the small
details linked to the specifics of the plot the house is built on. In
order to not change anything of the beauty of this spot, the
house was built around a large Figueira tree which shelters the
house against the heat and gives shadow on the large decks on
top of the house. This tree is visible inside the house through
large windows from all sides and gives a very strong feeling of
being connected to the pristine nature of this part of the world.
Extreme care was given by the owner to make sure that this
house meets all the latest standards of dealing with waste etc.
The best experts in the area were called in to make sure that all was done to make this house an example of
how to have a luxurious living space and still be completely part of nature.
The interior of the house is kept in natural materials and colours and as a
tribute to the strong ties to the original past of this house, all furniture in the
bathrooms, toilets and kitchen has been made from noble wood out of
demolished houses by an expert furniture maker in the area. The wooden
floors were treated with a special varnish which gives the appearance of
having been there for many decades. This house was built with the idea of
being able to host a higher than normal number of people to enjoy the
hospitality of the owners to be able to receive many friends and family at the
same time. The deck linked to the bar, barbecue, pizza oven etc. has given
place to a large table which can host up to 16 people under a shelter from the sun to enjoy pleasant lunches
and dinners. With small tables and chairs for breakfast and drinks and a lounging area with high quality
furniture and benches made out of (again) demolition wood, this house meets all standards of a comfortable
and luxurious living space.
The kitchen was made in a semi professional style to be able to cook
meals for many people with all the modern equipment needed but still
honouring a simple and natural appearance. The choice in plates, cutlery
and glasses is such that, first of all, there are enough to cater to many
people but also of a top quality to make the process of receiving friends
and setting up a beautiful table a pure pleasure. The living room with the
dining table for 8, the couches, TV area and office is large and
comfortable. The two ventilators on the ceiling in combination with the
large bay windows, which provide enough fresh air coming in, make it a
comfortable space to be in also when it is very hot outside. In colder days
there is the wood fire which heats the total space in the shortest time necessary. The bedrooms have all
separate air conditioning units and extra ceiling ventilators.
The house features a large flat television screen and a home theatre and connection
to Sky. The house has screens against incoming insects on all doors and windows
and although not an area pestered by annoying mosquitoes, reason why the garden
was kept with a surface of gravel rather than grass, it is still a very important asset
to keep the house clear of insects. There are 2 tanks of each 3000 litres for very
clean water straight off the mountain and as a precaution there is a generator for
the few times per year that there is a power cut and this gives a limited supply of
electricity to keep the house lighted until the power comes back on. Underneath the house is a fully equipped
laundry area with an extra space for a workbench for the tools etc. for repairs. Here is also the space to store
a.o. the chairs from outside during the wintertime.
The house features three large bedrooms, suites, each with their own
bathroom and toilet with the master bedroom on the first floor with a
beautiful view over the Lagoa from balconies all around. With the 2
bedrooms with each a double bed and an extra single bed and the master
bedroom with a 160x200 double bed , the house can comfortably sleep 6
adults and 2 children. All furniture and beds are of the highest quality.
The large deck on the first floor has a covered area for massages and meditation
and lounge chairs with a direct view over the Lagoa . The garden has a variety of
local trees, plants and flowers with our “own” banana trees. The fish pond with
carps and a many small fishes is beautiful, in particular at night when a spot light
shows the fishes at best. The garden all around the house is lighted by many
Japanese looking lights for maximum atmosphere when the day has come to an end
and one enjoys the stars and the moon from the comfortable lounging area.
Transport: Apart from transportation by means of a private boat, the house can easily be reached by the
regular ferry from the Prefeitura of Lagoa. These ferry boats stop at 24 places along the Costa de Lagoa and
the house is situated right next to Posto 11 , at 50 meters from the house. Cars can be parked at the last
ferry stop where cars still have access and under guard for little money. All along the Costa de Lagoa runs a
beautiful and exotic foot path and from the house to the first nice fish restaurant is a 10 minute walk.
