Update, June 1, 2012: The Bahamas government has announced a major policy change. All building materials to be used in the construction of a home in the Exumas are now exempt from both import duties and excise tax. This means that the cost of imported building materials has just been reduced by over 35%. One local building official estimates that the overall cost to build a home here has just dropped by at least 16%.
