Colonia del Sacramento is a small town of 30,000 people just an hour by ferry from Buenos Aires - a capital city of 12 million people. Combine that with a booming Brazil to the northeast and you have an ideal and consistent tourist destination.

The quality of life here is what makes it so attractive. There are no traffic lights and few police - Uruguay having one of the lowest reported rate of violent crime in the world. Situated on a peninsula that juts out into the River Plate, the town is surrounded by water and sandy beaches. There is a lovely boulevard running from the town center all the way to the golf course - a gorgeous 18 hole course reckoned to be the most testing in the country. There are two tennis clubs, fishing, a yacht club, watersports and several gyms.

The historic part of town is a quaint mix of cobbled streets and 17th century colonial architecture. This provides the main attraction for tourists who meander round the streets, museums and restaurants enjoying the relaxing atmosphere and slow pace of life.

We bought the hotel in 2008, did a complete renovation, added 6 rooms and opened in August 2009. The end product is a hotel with a colonial exterior and a modern interior. Over 3 years occupation has been over 60% and revenue is set to increase with completion of a 14th room - a loft apartment. Plans to extend to 16 rooms have been approved by the local council.
