Old Stone Mill in Lismore, Waterford, Ireland
The Old Buttermill
improving the trade of Lismore through the construction of a canal, to link Lismore with the navigable part of the River
Blackwater. The Buttermill got its name from the presence of a creamery and butter factory which was built on this canal in
1793.
Construction : The Buttermill is a four-storey structure of coursed, rubble sandstone masonry with a regular pattern of windows including blind windows, all with circular arched heads. It is “U” shaped in plan, with a pediment front on to the canal basin, which forms the base of the “U” and with the “U” facing north towards the main road. It has a carriageway through the centre which gives direct access to the edge of the canal basin.
Possible Uses : Situated beside the River Blackwater, Ireland's premier salmon fishing river, this property would lend itself to conversion into a Salmon Fishing Centre of Excellence. It could also be put to any number of artistic or cultural uses due to the nature of the building and it's location ... the heritage town of Lismore and adjacent to Lismore Castle, home of the Duke of Devonshire. Conversion into luxury apartments with further townhouses to be built on the adjacent land (20,000 square feet of yard to front and side of building and two thirds of an acre to the rear) is also an option.
