El Diablo Tranquilo consists of two buildings, the original hostel and Playa Suites, that collectively make up El Diablo Tranquilo Hostel & Bar. While the entire business is being sold, bids are being accepted on either unit separately as well as for the corporation and assets as a whole.
In November 2007, we opened our boutique hostel, with capacity for 58, on a 2000m2 plot of land stretching from Avenida Central to 7th street, half of this plot remains untouched and available for expansion. Our initial challenge was to augment traditional summer tourism by displaying the magic of this seaside village to an entirely new consumer. We launched with a bang and helped provide Punta del Diablo the infrastructure and visibility necessary to become the established destination it unquestionably is today. We garnered a place on Lonely Planet’s annual “Blue List”; a compilation of twelve must see destinations worldwide, we graced the pages of National Geographic as one of two Uruguayan locations on their exclusive “Stay List”. Meanwhile, we fortified the nascent perception of boutique hostels and graced lists of the world’s best as guidebooks and periodicals picked up on the trend. Both upscale hosteling and Punta del Diablo would be gaining traction for years to come. Supporting this claim, the departmental Tourism Ministry states that 36,000 foreign tourists arrived in 2002, climbing to 52,000 by 2007. In the four years since we opened our doors, that number has nearly quadrupled, to 196,000 in 2011. Over the same timeframe, the hostelling industry - non-existent prior to our arrival – grew to constitute 3.78% of all tourism receipts in Rocha, reported at over$4,920,000 annually.
El Diablo Tranquilo Bar launched in December of 2007 as the concert venue/restaurant branch of the El Diablo Tranquilo project, providing quality meals and all night fiestas from one of the most privileged oceanfront locations in town. In fact, due to agreement with the municipality to install and maintain a boardwalk entrance connecting the main roads directly to the beach we are built on one of under two dozen lots that will never have a roadway between our property and the Atlantic itself. Incidentally, this boardwalk passes through our restaurants decks and is commercially usable by only El Diablo Tranquilo.
In 2009, after succeeding in extending our high season for accommodations, we made the decision to lower our reliance on food and beverage service during a short peak season and turn our focus on the guests in house. This lead us to add Playa Suites to our restaurant facilities, and convert the upper two stories of the building into accommodation facilities which now house a boutique hostel on the second floor and four penthouse suites on the rooftop. The restaurant still seats upwards of 80 people and the full bar is ample for any type of occasion. The choice will be yours whether to open to the public, provide service only for hotel/hostel guests, or simply lease the restaurant for the summer and allow someone to live their dream on the beach while lessening your workload – in the last four years, we have done each with success.
This property is located on Rivero Beach of Punta del Diablo, a town that has become an icon of bohemian travel and a truly international destination and home alike.
