Home for Sale in 26 Kossuth Street, Tapsony, Somogy, Hungary

Traditional Old Hungarian House

The property is in fair condition. Needs work here and there as one would expect from a 100 year old house that laid empty for 4 years before i purchased it last summer. The best way to get to the house is fly to Budapest then take bus from bus station nearby -- about 3hr ride. The property is south-west, not so many miles from Austria.

The house, garden, barn, water (wishing) well, wine cellar, various fruit trees and four huge walnut trees are beautiful. So why am i selling ? I bought the house "blind" last July - -never visited Hungary nor saw the house ! I just knew i could not go wrong with purchasing such a house in central Europe. Many foreigners are looking for a European base to get permission to stay or set up European business, so are wanting to buy somewhere cheap (esp. compared To Western European countries). I was sick of UK so just went for it. However it is either a family (i have been living there alone) house where you integrate into the culture, language or it is a hoilday home where you would spend several months there a year. Unfortunately, i got there and immediately realised i don't even have a first home - -why was i buying a holiday home ? Otherwise, it is very beautiful and peaceful.

The 4 internal rooms are perfectly square. 16ftx16ft -- sitting room with wooden floor (all rooms have 12 ft high ceilings ! - -very grand); 11ftx11ft sitting room - -could be converted to kitchen since i had the electrics re-wired when i got there and put many sockets in that room ready for kitchen); 11ftx11ft bedroom; 16ftx16ft bedroom -- i was planning to extend hallway into this room then knock through the wall to bring the bathroom into the house. The hallway floor is original -- fantastic tiling from 1911 !! The house was originally built for a wealthy farming family a century ago. So many original features..e bathroom and kitchen are accessed by coming back out throught the front door (original Hungarian way apparently). To avoid confusion, the back of the house faces on to the road.

I presume one could easily convert the loft space but one could also consider converting the barn instead. It is nearly the same size as the house.

I am currently travelling. My friends a few doors up have the keys. Lovely people. Their English is limited -- if you know German language would be a distinct advantage ! But you will fall in love with the property - -i have no doubt. One of those houses where you close the door and feel like you have entered a different world.
