There is a massive tower like keep, and many stepped gables and corbelle oriels, also a tall battlement turret, it is truly a fairytale castle. Along the principal fronts is a terrace with a pierced ‘Jacobean parapet adorned with 5ft mythical Gryphons keeping watch of their castle. On the hill above the castle is a gothic ‘eyecatcher’ know as Oliver’s Folly.
One enters the castle through a heavy oak door into the impressive Clondfoy hall with its enormous fireplace and restored stained glass window depicting St Patricks life which leads to the grand oak staircase leading to the first floor return with the most outstanding 16ft tall stained glassed window featuring heraldic symbols.
*The ground floor of the castle contains, a beautiful wood panelled library with its ornately carved mahogany book cases and chimney piece, an impressive billiard room with its elegant original cornicing and a gothic Victorian oak fireplace, drawing room with original hand painted ceiling and stunning marble fireplace which lead to the magnificent ballroom boasting another elaborate hand painted ceiling and an antique marble fireplace leading onto an atmospheric gothic dining room with its intricate stencilled walls and heraldic corbels.
Double French doors lead from the Glenosheen hallway to the gardens. Throughout the castle there is an abundance of period features including, wooden floors and decorative cornicing. All ground floor reception rooms have 18ft high ceilings and contain large picture windows which flood the castle with natural light from every angle with stunning views to the gardens and surrounding mountainous landscape. Also located on the ground floor is the kitchen, pantry, servants dinning hall, laundry and various stores. The courtyard, which is accessed from the ground floor, contains a number of coach houses, stables and stores.
The first floor and upper mezzanine contains twelve bedrooms all with their own luxurious bathrooms with power showers and double slipper bath tubs.
The main bedroom suite boasts 14ft high ceilings and together with its ensuite is approx 800sq ft.
On the second floor there are a further nine rooms in need of refurbishment. From the west wing second floor one can enter on to the roof of the castle and survey the surrounding lands.
The castle has the added distinction of hosting Ireland’s largest private wine cellar which is in fantastic original condition and has a capacity to hold 55,000 bottles.
It is accessed via the original stone spiral staircase that connects to all floors and continues all the way to the bell tower.
