Golfito and the Golfo Dulce
The erstwhile “BANANA CAPITAL” GOLFITO, CAPITAL OF zona sur, is long on authentic character. It makes a perfect base for sportfishing in the gulf, hiking in nearby rainforests, boating along the mangrove-lined shores , and snorkeling at remote beaches where both surfers and marine turtles come ashore.
Golfito is connected to the Inter-American highway, 16 miles away, which dead-ends in town. The town itself sprawls along 5 miles of shoreline paralleled inland by steep jungle-clad mountains. The town was born in 1938, when the United Fruit company established its plantations nearby and built the town from scratch in a unique plantation style. Golfito swiftly became the main banana shipping port in Costa Rica.
A considerable expatriate population in Golfito includes a good number of yachters who arrived and succumbed to a spell from which they have never escaped. Others have washed up in more ways than one.
