Only 2 ½ hours northwest of Quito (Capital of Ecuador), the 190-hectares (470 acres) Mangaloma Nature Reserve nestles among the foothills of the Ecuadorian Andes. Elevation is 700-900 meters above sea level (c. 2,000-2500 feet), with year-round temperatures ranging between 19 and 26º Celsius (60-90ºFahrenheit). Such great biodiversity in a region increasingly visited by tourists offers excellent prospects for tourism, bird-watching and nature lovers.

NATURE RESERVE IN THE RAIN FOREST OF NORTH-WEST PICHINCHA

The Mangaloma Nature Reserve is part of the Chocó Bioregion which extends from Colombia into northwestern Ecuador, characterized by high biodiversity and its large number of endemic species. Internationally, the region is regarded as a “hot spot” in immediate danger of disappearing due to pressures of human population and development.

Established 16 years ago, the Mangaloma Nature Reserve set out to conserve and restore its 160 hectares of natural forest, mainly primary tropical forest with a few areas of secondary forest in recovery ever since. Four self-guided trails -a total length of 5 km (3 miles) - invite you to walk and enjoy the feeling of being inside the rainforest, amongst the astounding variety of trees, orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and many other plants and tropical flowers; as well as to hear and observe the birds, frogs, butterflies and other animals. Biodiversity lives! Visiting ornithologists and birdwatchers from all over America and Europe have identified over 290 species of birds on the Reserve, many of in danger of extinction.

Protecting the forest also helps to maintain the watershed, and the Pitzara River blesses Mangaloma with 1,000 meters of riverfront, the sound of moving water, and magical crystalline pools for bathing.

The remaining 30 hectares encompass infrastructure, and plenty of space for expansion and further landscaping in these paradisiacal surroundings.

Existing infrastructure includes:
• a house for the ranger and his family (100 m2).
• a cabin (120 m2) with capacity for 10 people, with its own kitchen, 2 WC and 2 showers.
• an open, two-story cabin (110 m2) with 2 WC, designed to execute training programs, as well as yoga events, meditation, and spiritual relaxation.

The water distribution system is fed from springs located inside the reserve. All facilities are built with local materials that respect the environment, such as wood from fallen trees and bamboo. Electricity is generated on site with a photovoltaic (solar) system.

Due to its relative proximity to Quito and the accessibility of good roads, the area in which the Reserve is located receives an increasingly large influx of foreign and domestic tourists, looking to enjoy nature and relax from the stress of urban centres. Additionally, Ecuadorian and foreign organizations working in Ecuador also seek facilities in which to hold special meetings, or to offer courses or workshops. This growing trend offers excellent economic prospects, and the reserve could easily adapt and/or expand its infrastructure to provide hospitality as an exclusive eco lodge or events venue.

Mangaloma Reserve, with its extraordinary diversity of flora and fauna, is also very suitable for scientific research and provides universities an extensive field for biological investigation projects with lodging facilities for science professionals and students.

As the founders of this reserve, we are convinced that the conservation of tropical forests is closely linked to the enhancement of the living conditions of the population and our goal has been to combine conservation with the opportunity to give our visitors a chance to enjoy nature in a friendly, healthy, natural and relaxed environment. Now we are seeking like-minded new owners who are eager to look after and enjoy Mangaloma.
