Welcome to the part of France where even the French come to get away. A book entitled 'From Here You Can't See Paris' was written by an American author who spent a year living in the nearby village of Les Arques and managed to capture the essence of this region, in the title alone.
Come here to disconnect, unplug, relax.... and then reconnect with the essential.
You'll find a market any day of the week in the nearby villages and towns, festivals, music and theatre. Visit a cave filled with prehistoric drawings, wander through medieval villages, cruise down the Lot river, cycle along the 160 kms of dedicated cycleways through vineyards amidst chateaus in the valley. Do absolutely nothing and enjoy the peaceful quiet at poolside. In the evening, you can go to a night market at a nearby farm where you can purchase all the elements of your dinner from local producers. 'Farm to table' doesn't get any closer! Long tables where you may be sitting with families and groups of all ages and nationalities, bbq grills lit, live music, the occasional goat wandering by, children playing and laughing, it is simple and authentic, conviviality as it should be.
The hamlet is absolutely stunning. The entrance is flanked by sculpted box hedges, and a statue of St. Jean Gabriel Perboyre... whose 'maison natale' ( birthplace and family home) is across the road.
Oh, and the house. The houses. There are 2. We renovated the mainhouse over 13 years ago as a 'summer house' and makes a perfect 'gîte'(holiday rental). It could easily become the permanent residence while keeping the option of renting out the barn.
The terrace in the front , which features the original stone sink, is a lovely place for coffee in the morning, or reading and relaxing in the afternoon. There is a rustic covered bbq loggia out back near the pool with a sink. The pool was renovated this spring(2017) with new liner, new decking, all new equipment: pump, filter and hoses, new fence. Under the house you'll find a cellar, including the original vaulted stone cellar.
The converted barn next door is a little bit more modern, loft-style, but still very transitional with a mix of materials:wood, cement, metal. It faces full South, which means that it is luminous and warmed by the sun, in addition to a woodstove for chilly months.
More space: The original stables with wooden mangers are still there under the barn, waiting for someone to make use of them, as well as the vaulted stone cistern that runs the length of the barn. This would be a fantastic sauna, hot tub, vaulted summer kitchen... lots of possibilities!
There is also a separate garage next to the house. All this, on 2 hectares (approximately 4 acres) of prairie and woods, with no through traffic.
It's a very special place, in a very special place, with a good feeling. It needs new owners who want to care for it and experience everything that life in this wonderfully forgotten corner of France lies waiting for them. I hope it is you.
