And many, many more adventures… This sturdy, hand-built and beautiful home is constructed from rare tropical hardwood harvested from mountain farms in the area. It measures 665 square feet, and with the large covered porch, the total footprint is 1000 sq ft. The home interior consists of a large open-air great room, one bath, and a large air-conditioned bedroom. At noon each day a cool, brisk breeze crosses the property from the west keeping the home naturally cool in the afternoons. Also, the home is elevated to keep air circulation moving around the structure during the wet, rainy season. The concrete foundation sits on overbuilt 42 steel pillars set into one meter depth concrete forms. City water feeds a large tower on the north side of the home. Water pressure is fantastic. Excellent WiFi connection speed allows for streaming TV, movies, documentaries, news, sports, work, banking, etc. There are CCTV security cameras and a security system. Annual property tax is running around $130.
The property is very peaceful and private, and it is a bird watcher's paradise. Fruit trees include - avocados, lemons, limes, oranges, tangerines, cacao, water apples, mamon chinos, coconuts, caimitos, star fruit, almonds, guanabana, guanava, cass, platanos and bananas. There is a covered garage area and storage shed.
I think we bought and broke every hand tool within a thirty mile radius as we worked with this hardwood. It is super dense. The home itself is made from chiricano. It is weatherproof and insect proof. Other hardwoods include…
a bar made from what is known locally as ronron (astronium graveolens)
porch railings and interior support beam from what is known locally as tiger posts, an incredibly dense, hard wood
bed and shelving from purpleheart (peltogyne purpurea)
other shelving and furnishings from what is known locally as cristobal
gate and front porch from nispero, the most weather resistant of all the lumber used
All this lumber was bought in the Costa Rican market, however this wood is outrageously priced in the international market, and I have never talked with anyone who has heard of an entire home constructed from such lumber.
I have a store of extra wood for any repairs or small modifications.
The home and property are super well maintained. The property is titled and entered in the national registry.
