For nearly 50 years Búzios has been the fanciest, the most cosmopolitan, sophisticated beach resort on the entire South American continent. For general orientation purposes, think of St. Tropez on the French Riviera or think of Easthampton, Long Island. But also know that Búzios has a personality that is entirely its own.
Búzios is an irregularly shaped peninsula of intimate little beaches inside a score of bays, coves and inlets. By local ordinance, no building rises above two stories in height, so the architecture is intimate, too.

The characteristic lodging is the pousada, that's the Portuguese language word for inn or small hotel. Of pousadas, Búzios has as many as 300 but nobody knows for sure.
