PLAYA JACO, COSTA RICA

The quaint sleepy beach town of Jaco is disappearing before our eyes. In its place, a burgeoning skyline of high-rise beachfront developments and an invigorated downtown core await the throng of tourists and new residents being welcomed to the Jaco area. This exponential development happening is occurring as we speak, and what's more, what you see now is only the beginning. Numerous projects are working through the environmental and permitting process, and will begin construction in the first half of 2007. Returning tourists from last year cannot believe the changes that have taken place in only one year. The main road in Jaco has been paved, and tall cranes dot the beachfront. Not only on the beach, there are projects of varying size throughout the town and on the roads leading to Jaco.

What has been the cause of this frenzy of development and flood of eager buyers from primarily the US and Canada? One theory suggests the baby boomers are restless, looking for a secure country with a tropical climate in which to have their retirement home. A foreign country were they feel welcome, the government democratic and stable, the economy robust, the scenery breathtaking, and the hurricane free weather, something that up until now, has only been a dream.

Others believe the present investment opportunities rival those of south Florida or Hawaii 20 years ago. Jaco and area condominiums purchased at pre-sale prices are often 40% to 50% more before they are completed. Weary investors that have been battered by the slow down in the US real estate market are looking for a place to invest, and Costa Rica in general and Jaco specifically fit the bill. The latest development in the area is the establishment of the Central Pacific Chamber of Commerce. The developers, hotel, and store owners have gotten together to organize and refine the many initiatives already underway for the area. The tasks are large, but the commitment is strong, and the fact that the community leaders have realized that with the massive investment and influx of tourists, the entire area needs to be elevated over time to become the premiere destination that the beaches and unparalleled beauty are of what the area deserves. We are already fortunate to have a world class resort just minutes from Jaco (Los Suenos), and the natural result of this premier destination is to rejuvenate the surrounding area.

Good things are happening in the Central Pacific region. We are looking forward to the completion of the long awaited road from San Jose, slated to begin early 2007. This road will shorten the travel time from the airport to the Jaco are to 45 minutes.
