ABOUT THE AREA
As most people agree Nice is the premiere city of the Cote d'Azur - easy to get to by air, rail, road, or sail.
The cultural, musical and artistic life is thriving with some 40 theatre companies, opera, ballet; hundreds of galleries and some of the most famous museums in the world (Matisse, Chagall, Renoir, Dufy, Picasso, Leger, Klein, etc)
The Cour Salaya is a hive of boutiques, antique shops and night spots. You can roller blade straight into many restaurants right off the Promenade des Anglais. Cimiez is a well of tranquility with the Greek and Roman ruins laid out just next to the Fransiscan Monatery in the olive grove that surrounds the Matisse museum
From the port you can catch a ferry to the islands, Villefranche, St Tropez, even Corsica. Hire a boat or scuba dive, snorkel, and play in the sea
Nice is the second most visited city in France after Paris, and was inhabited as long as 450,000 years ago, when mammoths roamed the surrounding hills! England has long had an affiliation with the city, being responsible for bringing in the casino and the Promenade des Anglais (built to protect English girls from the charms of the local Niçois). Vieux Nice is a great place to shop and go to night-clubs and restaurants. There is so much to see and do in this exciting city - you have to go yourself to enjoy its magic!
For those wishing to venture further afield, Monaco is the next exit up the autoroute towards Italy, and naturally one is just a short drive away from Vintimiglia with its large open shopping market, and from there the Italian Riviera beckons.
Taking the opposite direction on the autoroute, one soon arrives at Antibes and Cannes. Following the coastal road from there leads one eventually to St. Tropez and the myriad delights offered by this celebrity filled tourist mecca. But when one tires of the crowds, the well-known countryside of the South of France welcomes all with its endless vineyards, timeless villages and numerous wonderful restaurants.
