A Rich History

485 King Street, now known as Australian Sunrise Lodge was the site of one of Newtown's earliest pubs dating from the 1870s. Originally named the “Sir William Wallace Hotel”, the pub was the main stopover, with stables for horses and carriages, on the Cooks River Road (now King St). Early Cooks River Road neighbours included Michael Mullane, "Bootmaker", William Bradley, "Coachbuilder",Joseph Mulholland, "Hay and Corn merchant" and James Hawkins, "Oil and Colourman"

In 1911 The Sir William Wallace Hotel was extended and reborn as the Hotel Victory, celebrating the victory of the British in the Boer War. Throughout the years the site has had a rich history as a pub and traveller’s stopover under various owners.

In 1990 the building was completely rebuilt and extended. The Australian Sunrise Lodge was purpose-built as a boutique tourist hotel, with all modern construction, yet retaining the Victorian facade and many original features.

The King Street facade does not convey the true scale of the large modern building extending to the rear. The structure provides 600 sq m of floor space with 3 storeys extending the full length of the block. On entering from busy King Street visitors are constantly amazed to discover the tranquil leafy ambience of the guest rooms. The Juliette balconies with their northerly aspect provide warm winter sunshine and full shade in summer.

Just as its position on the Cooks River Road guaranteed the Hotel’s popularity in the past, its present day location on the Princes Highway (King St Newtown) ensures a steady stream of travellers to the hotel door. Located only 10 minutes from both Sydney Airport and Sydney City Centre, Australian Sunrise Lodge provides travellers with the perfect base to enjoy all the attractions of Sydney. The 422 bus to Circular Quay stops at the front door, and both Newtown and St Peters railway stations are within five minutes walk. Newtown has everything travellers are looking for. With more than 150 cafes and restaurants, and lots of interesting shopping on offer, guests at Australian Sunrise Lodge have a huge choice of activities just ouside the door. King Street Newtown is now the hub of an enormous population growth and commercial renewal with apartment buildings springing up in the high density developments around South Newtown and Sydney Park. Numerous people living in small apartments with no room for houseguests means many friends and relatives are booked in at the Sunrise Lodge. The hotel is also popular with local and overseas tourists, academics and business travellers. Its location is within walking distance of both the RPA Hospital UTS, and University of Sydney. The bus at the front door travels to UNSW and via Darling Harbour to the Sydney Opera House. The Enmore Theatre, the New Theatre as well as other venues, restaurants and cafes have established Newtown as one of the busiest entertainment destinations in Sydney.

The current operation has concentrated on the ever-popular budget sector of the tourist market. The hotel building has substantial ground floor areas opening onto King Street. These areas are suitable for additional uses such as a restaurant etc (Local Council consent is required) which, if pursued, could add substantial additional profits to the business.
