Castle for Rent in Kalladorferstrasse 1, Guntersdorf, Lower Austria, Austria
Guntersdorf Castle
Gorgeous vineyards, pristine scenery, Guntersdorf Castle´s location is where the Weinviertel is at its very best; it is situated between Hollabrunn, capital of the county, and the historic setting of the wine town Retz, along the old Prager Reichsstrasse, 55 km to the northwest of Vienna.
Schloss Guntersdorf is no doubt a stately castle, Renaissance style. Nevertheless, features dating back to former periods-ranging from an old Gothic portico to a Baroque stone bridge, Tuscan columns as well as Venetian chimneys-indicate the eclectic variety of cultural influences under which the castle was built.
Our guests have more than 30 rooms at their disposal, comprising 10 twin bedrooms, a parlor with an adjacent library, a pool billiard playroom, breakfast rooms, an event hall, sauna and gym area and a few additional rooms. As well, the open arcades on the first floor, extending across the entire courtyard, may be used as accommodation with a special flair.
The 5 hectare greenery surrounding the castle has an extended grid of pathways, suggesting leisurely strolls. Our guests can also use the pool located in the park, wedding pavilion, and tennis court.
History
Back in1108, the fortress, on which the castle is perched, was mentioned for the first time. Refurbished for the last time by Count Roggendorf in 1536, it was converted into what has been preserved in large part to this very day. In 1571, Baron Teufel acquired the property. Since 1703, the Barons Ludwigstorff have owned the castle.
The castle´s past was a rather eventful and belligerent one. For instance, the iron-cast ball in the driveway of the castle provides testament to the invasion of the Swedes in the 17th century, preceded by the siege on the part of Ottokar of Bohemia.
During the Reformation, the castle, owned by the Barons Teufel who were devout Protestants, played a significant role as a religious center. In 1945, Russian forces occupied the castle and used it as barracks and storage facilities, leaving a looted and destroyed castle behind.
After the pullout of the Russians in 1955, the then-owner Baron Carl Hugo Ludwigstorff undertook to repair the damages and refurbish the property. His descendants have been engaged in preserving the property until this very day.
