About Ios Island
Ios is the oldest landmass in Greece, having been carbon dated at 500,000,000 years of age. It existed long before the creation of its neighbor, Santorini, 27,000 years ago. Populated since the Neolithic period, there are prehistoric graves, temple ruins, Cyclopean walls, a derelict Venetian castle, Byzantine churches, Minoan artifacts and the grave of Homer at Plakato. Subsequent to its official recognition as ‘Homer’s Island’ and recent important archeological discoveries, the island now has an elected mayoral president. It has also attracted substantial governmental and EU funding that has provided modern infrastructure including roads, a de-salinating plant and reservoir, a police station, satellite communications, a well funded cottage hospital with ambulances and a heliport for medical emergencies, landscaping, a town hall, an international yachting marina and a museum.
Tourists and residents arrive by liner, jet boat or hydrofoil from other islands or Athens and there is a daily liner service during the short winter period. A fast boat journey from Piraeus to Ios takes approximately three hours.
Public and luxury private buses are available from the port with a current fare of one Euro and ten cents, wherever you board or alight. At Mylopotas, during the long summer holiday months, the swimming pools and bars of many hotels are open to the public for food and drink. Numerous restaurants provide international cuisine, whilst in the village can be found a gymnasium, bars, restaurants, boutiques, jewelers, souvenir shops, fresh food markets and hairdressing salons.
Mylopotas is 3km from the village and 5km from the port. Cars, 4x4 jeeps and mopeds are available for hire at several locations. Numerous quality taxis operate 24 hours, seven days a week during the summer months.
In addition to courteous government doctors and staff at the hospital, there are also three private doctors and two dentists.
