We bought this downtown property 6 years ago as an already existing small backpacker hotel established in1995. It has been listed for years in several guidebooks (Lonely Planet,Rough Guide etc.) as The Hidden Garden.(Jardin Escondido)
The first thing we did after our purchase was build the restaurant, tucked into the back part of the property. It consists of 2 rectangular dining spaces with tables , and a outdoor courtyard shaded by a big mango tree, with cast iron tables under umbrellas. All wooden furniture was designed and made by us, using beautiful local hardwoods. There's a reception desk in one of the roofed restaurant areas, a satelite tv and a computer desk with satellite internet.
The kitchen is well equipped with industrial stove and ovens,stainless steel pots,heavy duty mixers, blenders, juicers (we like cooking so we really equipped it) and there's a service area in the back for storage,a mill, laundry area, garbage etc., and has its own street entrance.
Our kitchen staff is very well trained (by us), all local, and are completely capable of working on their own. The restaurant employs 4 full time kitchen workers and 2 part time.
The hotel employs 3 fulltime workers & 1 part time (cleaner,night watchman,reception)
We have created a varied menu with authenic Mexican,Italian,Ecuadorian,curries,soups & salads with an emphasis on organic,local our foods are handmade frm scratch(corn tortillas,breads,raviolis,mole poblano,yogurts,ice creams & cheeses)
We remodeled the hotel in the second building phase. First the old rooms were redone, then a whole new part was added as well as a swimming pool, and a big jacuzzi. Now there are a total of 13 rooms, all with private bathrooms. The water system heats with gas, which is quite 's a t v room, massage room as well as a lounge area. The maximum capacity of guests is 38 persons.
The hotel & restaurant are well built and the design is inspired by Mexico and the Mediteranean.a lot of rich colors, tropical feeling with traditional roofs & floors mixed with rammed earth and adobe walls and wooden ceiling beams create a warm and comfortable space. a gorgeous garden with full grown citrus, banana, mango trees, which we use the fruit for fresh juices in the restaurant.
We also have been doing live music on saturdays for 4 years with different genres of music (jazz,latin,reggae) and have become quite known for that also around Ecuador.
Our room prices currently fluctuate between 12 $ and 15 $ per person, breakfast included. The high seasons are : Christmas thru New Year, February (Carnaval),& Easter, July and August as well as a number of local, catholic holidays and prolonged weekends.
