The northern side of Pirin mountain, where Bansko is located, is a National park and it has declared a UNESCO world heritage site for its unique eco-systems. There are 198 lakes and about 2 000 highland plant species that can be seen in this park.
Bansko is 160 km away from Sofia, 150 km away from Plovdiv and 150 km away from Kulata, a check point at the Bulgarian-Greek border. Its altitude is 925 m above sea level and its ski tracks are at 2000 to 2600 m ASL. The skiing season there opens in mid December and closes in mid April. In 2003 the latest ski lifts manufactured by Doppelmeyer Co. were installed in this resort and they included an 8-seater cab lift, a 4-seater and a 2-seater open lifts, 2 ski lifts and a skiing practice school for children. All ski tracks are equipped with artificial snow making machines.
The construction works on site started in October 2006.
