Medieval Hilltop Castle, One Hour's Drive From Rome

Ancient hilltop castle, dating back to the 900s AD, in the village of Vacone, which was originally a Roman castrum or military encampment under Caesar Octavian Augustus. In a panoramic dominating position, the castle has views of the Tiber valley, mountains and forests, and Rome in the distance. Over the centuries the castle belonged to a Pope and many powerful Roman noble families, from the Orsinis to the Caetani, Spada and Marini Clarelli.

This historic property consists of the Medieval castle proper, an annex for servants and service rooms, courtyards, terraces and a garden with a splendid Holmes oak tree.

From the gate, one crosses a belvedere courtyard with battlemented walls to reach the entrance to the castle. A narrow staircase leads to the old vaulted dungeon rooms, until recently occupied by a restaurant.

A series of grand salons and two bathrooms are located on the ground floor. Many of the rooms are vaulted or have decorated beams, fireplaces. Ancient terracotta tiles cover the floors.

The upper floor consists of five large rooms, a smaller one, four bathrooms and a battlemented terrace.

An internal courtyard separates the castle from the annex, spread over three floors and a small tower. This building once housed the old guard rooms, stables, service rooms and servants quarters. It now includes six large rooms and four bathrooms, plus a spacious panoramic terrace, and access to the tower.

Basic restoration work on the castle and annex was carried out recently, including the roof, plumbing with a total of 12 bathrooms, wiring, heating
plant. Restoration needs to be completed on the castle and annex.
