southeastern quarter of of the large off-shore island, D’Urville Island,
with an area of approximately 60 square miles, it is the eighth-largest
island of New Zealand. D’Urville lies very close to the mainland, separated
by the narrow 650 yard wide and dangerous French Pass, known to
Maori as Te Aumiti, through which water passes at up to eight knots (8.7
mph) at each tide.
Kapowai Bay is the main entry point to the island, the journey by
boat from the mainland settlement of Elmslie Bay, near French Pass across Admiralty Bay is only 1.5 miles and takes just minutes.
D’Urville is located at the northwestern extreme of the Marlborough
Sounds, which lie on the northern coast of New Zealand’s South Island. It
is one of the few privately owned islands in the Marlborough Sounds as
most are held by the Crown as reserve and park land.
Within the coastal portion of the land encompassing Kapowai Bay
& Woodmans Bay, there are a number of sites that have been surveyed for
