Picada Cafe is parte of the Rota Romantica (Romantic Route - http:// ), which is a scenic tourist route which runs through 13 municipalities located in teh Mountainous Serra Gaucha in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The area was originally colonized by German immigrants in teh first half of the 19th century. The strong German influence can still be seen in each of these beautiful towns and villages - this truly sets the route apart from others in Brazil. The Germanic roots are visible in the architecture, gastronomy and in the accent and language of the people - and, of course, in their Northern European appearance.
The Rota Romantica is approximately 184 km (about 114 miles) in distance and extends from Sao Leopoldo to Sao Francisco de Paula. The 13 municipalities along the route are: Sao Leopoldo, Novo Hamburgo, Estancia Velha, Ivoti, Dois Irmaos, Morro Reuter, Santa Maria do Herval, Presidente Lucena, Picada Cafe, Nova Petropolis, Gramado, Canela, and Sao Francisco de Paula.
The region also has beautiful hydrangeas (hortensias) planted in many public areas including the sides of the highways. It is also a famous region for it's arts and crafts, chocolate production and leather goods.
Don't miss the "Cafe Colonial" in one of the local restaurants.
This property is in this region but it is definitely off the beaten tourist path.
Nearby there are the cities of Garibaldi, Bento Goncalves and Caxias do Sul, which were predominantly settled by Italians and are famous for their grape and wine production, as well as leather goods.
The weather is sub tropical- temperate, with definite seasons. The winter can be cold but usually the temperature does not fall below 32 - 30 F. Some frost and very rarelya 1/2 - 1" of snow on the taller mountains.
If you like rural tourism this is the place for you, with the option of visiting all these tourist areas which are also very nice. A car is necessary.
There are many local restaurants with very good and un expensive food.
