Café: Two-tiered deck dining area with a view of the Neiafu Harbour’s fjord-like Port of Refuge and a unique roofing system with organic lines to accentuate the natural beauty of the Neiafu Harbour. The front desk area has been constructed with considerable thought to aesthetics. Rounded-edges & flowing lines provide a clean, airy, and lively location for tourist information services. The café serves fantastic espresso-style coffees, thick milkshakes, fresh fruit smoothies, breakfast, lunch & dinner. Our Tapas-style dinner menu has an international-fused-with-Tongan fare & inexpensive prices. Coming from the restaurant-rich city of San Francisco, we’ve put a lot of energy and thought into our menu and are quite proud of the reception we’ve received. Games, magazines, a book-swap, and Talent Open Mic Nights are all very popular. It is not at all uncommon to see the Café, Booking Office, and Kart Safari areas full of people from morning to night during the busier time of year! The Café is Fully Licensed as a ‘Restaurant with Liquor’ and is marketed and considered up-market enough to not require security during operating hours. With its ambiance and view from the deck, the Aquarium has become known as a great place to enjoy a bottle of wine. The restaurant comfortably seats 40, and has accommodated up to 75. The Café is equipped with a 7-passenger diesel 4x4 van, a shower in the bathroom, a full kitchen, good ventilation, hand-made tables, good-looking and comfortable seating, good music, tiki-torches, candlelight, and ambient overhead lighting in the evenings, inside ceiling fans, a Fiji Water display refrigerator case, ample rubbish storage and periodic pickup, no hassle herb garden, and great relationships with stock vendors. Customers of the Aquarium Cafe have free dock access and ample parking. Please note… contrary to our name, there are no live animals to view at our restaurant!
Internet & WiFi HotSpot: Inside is a 7-station Internet Café, laptop Internet plug-in, Wireless access, and easily managed HotSpot administration for the WiFi broadcasted to the harbour using a dedicated server and commercial-grade gear for the 400+ visiting yachts that come to Vava’u each year. Internet café and POS software is simple and easy to use. Flat screens, headphones with mic, and webcams provide a smart and updated look. The HotSpot log-on page includes a virtual ‘Yachtie Guide’ for helpful information about Vava’u, direct server links to Kart Safari info, pics, video footage, and Aquarium Café’s Menus, and direct server links to advertising from local operators for an annual fee.
Yacht Moorings: Out in the harbour, easily seen from the café and nearby to town, but away from the noise of the night-life, are Six-(6) Cyclone-Strength Moorings for hire that we built in 2006. Insurance company–rated by two major underwriters ensures that yachts staying over for the summer-season are able to procure riders easily. During the sailing season, the moorings are consistently rented out and advance reservations often requested in person and via email.
Sailing Dinghies: Just off the jetty in front of the café are the 6 Sailing Dinghies. The sailing dinghies each have one brightly coloured sail, removable centerboard, tiller rudder, clam-cleat mainsheet, adjustable outhaul, lifejackets, oars, and are easy to upright. They seat two to three adults, are fairly evenly matched, and are great fun to sail in the famous Friday afternoon Friendly-Island-Yacht-Races. The sailing dinghies are meant to stay inside the Neiafu Harbour where staff can easily see them, but the business could be expanded to include overnight island-hopping camping trips. The Sailing Dinghies are easily managed within the Aquarium Café operation, but would do well to stand alone as their own business with room for expansion.
Bookings: Below the Aquarium Café is our Bookings Office. The Aquarium is a hub for tourists meeting each other and getting much needed tourist information. At our Booking Office, we’ve made it easy for guests to find out about the range of activities and accommodation available in Vava’u and are able to connect them with the Operator that best suits their needs. Popular activities include Whale Watching, Diving, Snorkelling, Kart Safaris, Kayaking, Biking, Sailing, Botanical Gardens, Guided Hikes, Zego Tours, Rent-A-Boats, Surfing, Fishing, Kite-Surfing, Massage Therapy, Tongan Cultural Feasts, Island Tours, and a range of Accommodation from Backpacker to Boutique Style & Island Resorts. The Bookings Office’s walls are tastefully covered with maps, charts, and local Operators’ advertisements. There is also storage space for the Café’s needs and room for the WiFi Server. Whether an advance booking by email, website or phone, or walk-in foot-traffic, we believe that tourists should have one-stop access to information on all the activities and accommodation available in the island group, that communication should be prompt and complete, and that they shouldn’t have to pay an additional service fee. In exchange for connecting them to their preferred Operator, local business owners are happy to pay us 10% to 15% commissions and everybody wins! The system is set up to be concise and thorough with vouchers for the tourists and monthly reports sent to the operators so that the benefits of our bookings are clear. The Bookings have been very successful and have a very low overhead as a business. Additionally, it’s a great avenue for getting bookings for the Kart Safaris and customers to come upstairs to the Café. As the location is so conveniently located on the waterfront, other operators will often pick their clients up at the Aquarium. Pack-lunches ordered in advance are another popular up-sell for the Café. The Bookings are easily run and managed by staff using updated Excel spreadsheets outlining our expert knowledge of all there is to do in Vava’u.
Shaved Ice & Bookings: A small office located in the center of town-proper is a satellite Bookings, Kart Bookings, and Hawaiian-style Shaved Ice business. The location is ideal, overhead is very low, rent is paid in full through the end of 2008, and the Shaved Ice is popular with tourists and locals alike. The Shaved Ice machine is antique looking and quite novel. We even have a spare machine, still in the box. The walls of this office are covered with local operators’ advertisements and bookings are confirmed with direct communication and to the Aquarium Café’s Booking Office.

You truly can’t imagine and we can’t possibly explain how cool this tour is until you’ve done it yourself! After exploring the island of Vava’u on a quad-bike and finding the stunning beauty of the place and geology unlike what we’ve seen on other pacific islands, we knew we had to share it with others. We brought in the Karts and worked with various landowners to cut two- (2) tour tracks through the bush for a 40-km, 2-and-a-half to 3- hour tour of the main island.
The tour starts with a pre-briefing for safety and what to expect and then takes guests through villages, plantations, beaches, along bush trails and ridgelines to picturesque lookout points, a lot of which had never been seen prior to this tour by tourists and most locals. Visit Flying-Fox (Fruit Bat) colonies, see Humpback Whales breaching off the coasts, and see the most eastern point of Tonga and the most northern point of Vava’u. Tours are guided to maintain respect of landowner’s property and guides are mechanics as well so no one gets stuck in the bush! The Karts are lots of fun to drive, but this is really a land tour and about the spectacular beauty of the island.
The government has been very supportive of this activity, unique to the South Pacific, as one that is assisting the Kingdom in developing its blossoming tourism economy.
The business includes the only Tongan-style Fale on the waterfront that we built specifically to store the Karts. There are 11 Karts in a combination of 150cc single seaters and 250cc double seaters. The Karts are all 4-strokes complete with roll-bars, sun covers, harnesses, helmets, EEC certified, licensed and registered, centrifugal clutch, a low center of gravity, and easy to drive. The guides ride the 2 Quad Bikes, one of which is 4x4. We also have a complete inventory of spare parts and tools and good relationships have been fostered with both the manufacturer and a US distributor for spare parts. The manufacturer has given us exclusive Distributorship for Tonga should the business expand to include sales of the Karts to residents. In April 2006 the business was granted a two-year Development License (duty free on imported capital goods).
Good Will: Recently aired on Getaway 9 Australia and in New Zealand, featured in New Zealand Herald Travel section, 2-page spread in Virgin Blue’s In-Flight Magazine April 2007 and scheduled to be included again in December 2007, online on website , , , in Yahoo!
