The porch offers a double door into the garden, which consists of a lawn interspersed with bushes, and some fixed raised stone planters. The garden has coconut palms, a prolific avocado tree, several varieties of lime and other citrus trees, papayas and other fruiting trees. Also a large collection of different plants; the owner is an avid gardener. A path leads to the dock which extends 12m into the water and has a palapa roof. In the garden is a large (~6x8m) shed made of tropical hardwood, with a concrete floor, electricity and water. This used to be the house of a Mayan family until a few decades ago. The entire yard is walled (except on the lake side) in traditional local stone, with two sturdy gates of local hardwood.
Since the house has been continuously lived in and repaired, everything works. The kitchen is well-equipped and includes a dishwasher. The water supply is reliable. The house has a biodigester that works very well, and has an adaption so it never needs to be emptied. There is good internet, and the electricity is mostly reliable - a few outages a year. There is a 4,000 gallon (16,000 liter) cistern underground. On one side of the house is a small hotelito under construction, on the other side a large terrain with a few cabanas that are occasionally rented.
The village of Buenavista is located on Laguna Bacalar, about 20km north of the town of Bacalar. The road is a highway, straight, very well maintained, and easy to drive. Buenavista is a small, typical Mayan village where many older women still wear the traditional huipil dress. Chickens, turkeys and sheep walk around, and there are small stores selling daily necessities and local products, for example the famous honey from the Mellipona bee, locally made hammocks (made to order in whatever colors you want), and the traditional Mayan dish cochinita pibil on Sundays. A small number of English-speaking foreigners live in the village, and the very first beginnings of tourism are appearing, but it is still quiet most of the time. There is transport from the village to Tulum, Bacalar and Chetumal, but realistically a car is almost a necessity.
